Shepherd’s Monument Inscription
In staffordshire, England, there is sculpture that has invented the twits and intellect of many intellectuals in the attempt to decode an inscriptions reading DOUOSVAVVM. This inscription has been a mystery for years. Although the Shepherd Monument was constructed back in the 18th century the letter found there has never been solved even after 250 years that the building was completed It is set within a stone arch which appears like an entrance to a cave, carved to look natural and wild. It contains a marble base relief copy of Poussin's painting'' The Shepherds of Arcadia'' and a carved inscription below it.
The relief shows a woman and three sheperds, two of whom are pointing to a tomb. On the tomb is carved the Latin text ET IN ARCADIA EGO (' I am also in Arcadia'' )
The carving displays a number of small alteration from the original painting.
